Patricia (Pat) Coates (nee Williams) passed away on Thursday May 6, 2004 at the age of 54
years after a very brief bout with cancer. Pat is survived by her husband Wayne, her brother
Allan and her sisters (M) Lyn Wallin and Maureen Getz; her brother-in-law Darryl Coates and
his wife Margaret; her aunts Phyllis (Mel) Melstrom, Vera (Bob) Telfer, Margie (John)
Grandmont and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Albert and
Alice Williams.
Pat was raised and schooled in Taber, Alberta then attended the University of
Alberta in Edmonton where she met Wayne. They were married August 28, 1970 and left the
next day for Stillwater, Oklahoma where Pat completed her BS in Home Economics Education.
Pat and Wayne returned to Canada in 1973 and Pat taught Home Economics Education for eight
years. During that time they bought a farm and raised beef cattle along with assorted other
livestock.
In September 1981 Pat and Wayne moved to Tucson, Arizona. Pat retired from
teaching at that time and tried her hand at retailing by managing a dress shop which catered to
tall women. She was in real estate for several years prior to enrolling at the University of
Arizona where she earned her MS in Library Science in December 1989. She worked at the
University of Arizona library in several temporary positions until accepting a Technical Librarian
position with Honeywell (formerly Allied Signal) in April 1993. Recently she began working
half time as a Technical Editor and had found this new challenge to be particularly rewarding.
Pat will be deeply missed by her husband and their nine cats - in particular by Whiskers, and by
the many people she has worked with and lent a sympathetic ear to during her lifetime.
